Everything You Need To Know About Botox

Let me tell you why Botox rocks! Botox treatments are inexpensive, quick, and have immediate results. Botox treatments have been a staple of skin clinics for a long time and are used in both medical and cosmetic dermatology treatments.

What Exactly is Botox, And What Does It Do?

Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are essentially muscle relaxants that work to block the transmission of nerve impulses in targeted areas of particular muscles. If you want to tackle crow’s feet, frown lines, and wrinkles then you might want to consider these treatments. Botox is also great at preventative treatments – to prevent wrinkles, and fine lines and tighten up your facial structure. Botox can reduce the underlying muscle activity that causes skin to appear wrinkled by working beneath the surface of your skin. We call it the ‘miracle poison’ because Botox is classified as a neurotoxin and is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. These substances target the nervous system, disrupting the nerve signaling processes that stimulate muscle contraction.

Who Is a Good Candidate For Botox

Some factors we consider when providing Botox treatments are overall health, age (you should be over 18 before considering Botox), not pregnant or breastfeeding and we also make sure our patients do not have any history of neuromuscular diseases. Starting Botox injections while you are younger is a great preventative measure to fight wrinkles from forming as you get older, making it an anti-ageing favourite!

How Immediate Are Results And How Long Do Botox Treatments Last

The beauty of Botox is that the procedure is quick and easy – you can be in and out of the clinic within about 15 minutes! Some of our clients come in on their lunch break to get their treatment as you can go right back to work and your daily schedule. You can even apply makeup following your treatment, you may have a little bruising the next day but this will go away quickly. That being said if you have a big event or vacation coming up, give yourself a good two-week window just to be sure you are free of any skin bruising that may occur after your treatment.

Results will be visible within 24-48 hours! However, it does take about two weeks for the full effects to set in post-treatment. Another good reason to time your Botox about two weeks ahead of events, just to be safe and reap the rewards of looking and feeling your best.

You should plan to return for continued treatments within about 3-4 months to keep up appearances and benefits from receiving Botox. Other types of dermal fillers will last longer (usually around six months) but are also more expensive than Botox. Right now we are offering a Botox special for new patients to get 20 units of Botox for only $159!  You’ll see results even after one treatment – another reason Botox rocks!

How To Prepare For Botox Treatments

It’s important to have a consultation and make sure you select your treatment provider wisely. Make sure to mention any medications you might be taking when you have your consultation – particularly blood thinners, muscle relaxants, or sleeping aids as you might need to discontinue these for a short period of time prior to your injection. Also, be sure to mention any allergies and previous dermatology treatments you may have had.

What Are Some Medical Uses For Botox?

By blocking specific chemical signals in the body that cause muscles to contract, Botox temporarily relaxes the muscle. There are also several medical uses for Botox injections, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved its use for a number of medical conditions. Conditions that Botox can be used as a treatment are:

  • Cervical dystonia: This is a condition that can be quite painful as it causes the neck muscles to contract involuntarily which can cause your head to twist and turn in very uncomfortable positions.

  • Lazy eye: Lazy eye most commonly occurs when there is an imbalance in the muscles that surround the eye. The most common cause of lazy eye is an imbalance in the muscles responsible for positioning the eye.

  • Muscle contractions: There are certain neurological conditions, such as cerebral palsy that can make one’s muscles contract and cause your limbs to pull inwards.

  • Hyperhidrosis: People with this condition sweat an extreme amount even when it isn’t hot outside and when no physical exertion is happening. It’s often used to treat sweaty palms or underarms.

  • Chronic migraines: Sometimes people can experience very frequent migraines and seek treatment to decrease the frequency of these painful headaches.

  • Bladder dysfunction: If one has an overactive bladder, injections can help reduce urinary incontinence.

  • Eye twitching: Sometimes the muscles around the eye can become twitchy and injections can relieve this contracting around the eye area.

  • TMJ: For those that grind their teeth, botox injections can help relax the jaw muscle to reduce clenching.

What Are The Risks And Side Effects Of Botox?

Choose your treatment provider wisely! As long as Botox is done by an experienced practitioner side effects are relatively minimal and infrequent. Although Botox injections are relatively safe, some side effects can occur. The most common side effects are light bruising and swelling around the injection site, dryness in the eye or excessive tearing, mild headache, and sometimes a droopy eyelid or raised eyebrow. These effects pass quickly and are usually very mild.

It's very unlikely for more serious side effects to occur but there is a risk of the toxin Botox contains spreading into your body. If you experience any weakness in the muscles, trouble speaking or swallowing, problems with vision, or loss of bladder control, these are effects that should bring you to see a doctor immediately and make sure to let the doctor know when and where your Botox treatments were done, and how long it has been since your last treatment. These side effects although rare, can occur hours later or weeks later – so make sure to listen to your body and pay attention if you experience any of these rare but serious effects.

Selecting the right treatment provider is key to avoiding side effects from Botox treatments. If administered incorrectly the chances of more serious side effects are increased. Make sure your treatment provider specializes in Botox and cosmetic dermatology to protect yourself from any unwanted effects.

How Do I Maintain Results From Botox Injections?

It’s important to let your skin be in the first 24-48 hours after your treatment. Don’t rub your skin or stretch the areas around the injection site. The effects of Botox will last about three months and to maintain the effects you’ll need to schedule regular follow-up injections.
